Mary Lyon, educator and founder of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College), was born on February 28, 1797, in Buckland, Massachusetts. Her parents were Aaron Lyon, a farmer, and Jemima Shepard Lyon. After her father's death in 1802 and her mother's remarriage 1810, Lyon remained on the family farm as a housekeeper for her brother. Anne Carey Edmonds was born in Penang, Malaysia, in 1924, the daughter of an English father and an American mother. She attended the University of Reading for two years and was then drafted by the government to work in the civil service. In 1946 she came to the United States and in 1948 she graduated from Barnard College.
